Hepatitis B
In one study patients with acute hepatitis were grouped epidemiologically. Those who admitted parenteral drug use were positive for hepatitis B antigen 54% of the time. In another study, patients with hepatitis B were assessed to attempt to find the source. Sexual or domestic contact was incriminated in 40%. In a clinic for sexually transmitted diseases, a high frequency of hepatitis B positive serology was documented.
Comment: These studies on the epidemiology of hepatitis B demonstrate specific risks in drug abusers and confirm sexual contact as a source as well. Transmission of hepatitis B can be direct or indirect. Direct transmission occurs in household contacts and the risk appears related to the intensity and duration of the contact.
