Reye syndrome is usually preceded by a viral illness, especially chicken pox or influenza, and has been reported in multiple cases in the same family. The liver dysfunction is usually greatest at the time of onset of the central nervous system manifestations. Appropriate laboratory evaluations include a serum ammonia, SGPT, blood sugar, and examination of the cerebral spinal fluid. Treatment is symptomatic; peritoneal dialysis is not of proven value.(R.J.H.)
