Preschool Language Milestones
Language is a set of abstract symbols shared by a group and used according to accepted rules for the purpose of communication. This definition includes understanding what is said as well as speaking meaningfully and clearly enough to be understood. Spoken words are language only if they communicate meaning and are not mere repetitions of what has been heard. Therefore, assessment of children's language development has to examine how they understand what is being told to them and how they communicate what they need to tell, rather than just then saying the word.
Higher social class and maternal education have been shown to be related to more advanced language development even before age 2 years.
