The Roar Behind the Door

In a pediatric office there is always some background noise to which we've grown accustomed: phones, children crying from shots, or infants balking at being weighed. But sometimes an unaccustomed commotion, a noise that sounds different, comes from an examination room. If I happen to be nearby or perhaps standing outside the door looking over the family's chart, I like to go close to the scene and cock my ear for a minute just outside the closed door to get a few snatches of the sounds. "Stop that!" " No, don't do that!" "Get out of there!" Then, perhaps, a wail, a brief cry, or a thump or two.
