Hypnosis: A Unique Communication Tool for the Black Bag
Editors: Lawrence F. Nazarian, MD.
While testing a child's extraocular movements, I have been known to say, "I am hypnotizing you. Pretty soon you will think you are a frog!" Although this line frequently elicits a laugh (and an occasional croak), I now know, after reading Dr Sugarman's article in this issue, that I have been perpetuating a misconception about a practice that for many of us is mysterious and a bit spooky. We should be grateful to Dr Sugarman, not only for demystifying the hypnotic process and giving us a clear picture of how it works, but especially for providing practical examples of how we can use this phenomenon to help our patients.
