The US health care system is undergoing a major transformation. The system is fiercely competitive and market driven. HMOs and PPOs are growing faster than anticipated, and the distinction between the two will blur as competition forces them to emulate each other. Those HMOs and PPOs that prove to be successful will control use, ensure quality, and restrain pricing. To survive, physicians must appreciate their need to assume control and must carve out their niche.
