TECHNICAL TIP: Transillumination for Localization of Arteries and Veins in Young Infants

It is often necessary to puncture or cannulate arteries and/or veins of young infants for sampling or for injection purposes. Transillumination, using a fiberoptic light source, provides light intensity that greatly enhances identification of these vessels and the likelihood of successful cannulation. Use of a fiberoptic light source allows tiny blood vessels, both arteries and veins of Ithe newborn infant, premature or full term, to be accurately identified and punctured or cannulated.
