The Beacon Burners Running Program: Empowering Kids to Run Round and Round Without Reinventing the Wheel

Nationally, childhood obesity increased from 5% in 1963 to 1970 to 17% in 2003 to 2004. (1) This epidemic affects the underprivileged disproportionately. For example, the prevalence of obesity in the Western Addition neighborhood of San Francisco is near 40%. (2) One reason is the lack of safe areas outdoors for children to play. The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Primary Care Pathway (PCP) pediatric residents serving this community decided to improve access to places to exercise for their patients by starting an after-school running club.
