Practicing Pediatrics With the Meter Running

Transportation difficulties can be significant barriers to medical care, and at one of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) primary care sites, this certainly seemed to be the case.

One particular visit prompted pediatric resident Kristin Ray to look further into the issue: "For the third time that summer, I was seeing a young mother of three who was living in a shelter. Near the end of the visit, she sent her 10-year-old son out to feed the parking meter, with change and keys in hand. She left shortly afterwards with her other children.
